The Briard is a farm animal and loves to herd anything. They have exceptional hearing and are basically kind, but have a strong protective instinct. They make a wonderful, alert watchdog. This breed has a fine memory and is intelligent with a lot of initiative. They are very trainable.

Briards are good-natured and very adaptable to living with children if they are raised together.

Briards can be a bit dog aggressive, but if socialized properly, they can coexist with other pets.

The Briard will do okay in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised. They are moderately active indoors and do best with an average sized yard.

This breed is meant to be a working breed and will become restless if they are not exercised enough.

Required:
Dirt and water do not cling to the Briard’s coat. If well-groomed they shed very little. Expect the minimum time required to be two hours a week and much longer if you have been remiss. Their coats can become matted without regular attention.
