The Belgian Shepherd is a elegant, muscular black dog, who is solid but not heavy, and very agile, with a proud carriage. The body is squarely proportioned with triangular ears that stand erect. Their muzzle is long and tapering. They have a very full, moderately long coat. Their chest is neither broad nor narrow, but is deep reaching to the elbow.

Trainability: This is a smart and obedient breed who is serious and watchful with strong protective instincts. These dogs are often very shy or sensitive. This breed needs extensive socialization from an early age and firm, but not harsh, training from an experienced master.
With Children: Belgian Shepherds are good with children.
Other Pets: These dogs can be rather dominant toward other dogs and need to be properly socialized with other pets.
Climate: This dog adapts well to all climates.
Indoor / Outdoor: The Belgian Shepherds will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. It is moderately active indoors and will do best with at least an average-sized yard. This dog can sleep outdoors, although he prefers to be with people.
Exercise Required: This is a working dog that is accustomed to an active outdoor life. It requires a lot of exercise.
Grooming Required: The Belgian Shepherd has a long, straight heavy under coat that requires daily combing and brushing. Extra care should be given when the dog is shedding.
