Trainability:  Early intense socialization and obedience training are an absolute must for this breed. They will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. Training must be done with firmness, fairness, patience, and consistency. The American Bulldog’s talents include tracking, hunting, schutzhund, weight pulling, and guarding.

With Children:  They are quite fond of children but sometimes do not know their own strength, thus, as with all dogs, they should be supervised with small children.

Other Pets: They are not always well behaved towards cats and smaller pets, but correct socialization at an early age can greatly increase the chances of them accepting these animals.

Climate:  Does well in all climates.

Indoor / Outdoor: They need room to expand their energy and will do best in a home with a backyard.

Exercise Required: The American Bulldog does best when they are given a job to do. They enjoy frequent securely leashed walks, family play sessions, and romping in the yard. This breed does best on a farm with room to roam or in a home with a large fenced yard.

Grooming Required: The short, harsh coat is easy to groom. Comb and brush with a firm bristle brush, and bathe only when necessary. This breed is an average shedder.
